What do we lose when AI replaces our writing?
I still
remember the day when I was
introduced to Chat GPT. One
fine morning a friend of
mine called me if I
had heard about it. I was clueless about Chat GPT. He enlightened
me on some benefits of using Chat GPT. I created my account and it
looked awesome to me.
My perception was this
tool is a secret weapon and only a few people know about this particularly not
my clients as they are still sending me writing requests.
But that perception didn’t last long,
the following week I saw
a billboard CHAI GPT in front of an ordinary tea stall. It was amusing
but was a testament to how fast the concept has spread in no time.
Fast forward a year, and the question becomes completely irrelevant
today. It becomes obsolete or foolish to ask whether they used
chat GPT in their daily life. Even kids do it effectively, now writing an
assignment for them is a child’s play.
Back to the topic; is Artificial Intelligence killing our creativity? Different people have
different perceptions, but I wish to share my insights based on my personal
experience.
Before using Chat GPT, I used to do a lot of research on
every topic I tackled. Lot means a whole lot of digging, confronting
contrasting information in between, and finally making notes on research, with a
nagging worry about whether I am missing any valid points that my client does
not wish to miss I will start writing and use Grammarly to fine
polish or iron out any grammatical wrinkles.
Chat GPT reduced this task very much. I felt Chat
GPT would be handy and better than Grammarly to complete my task. My
first assignment to Chat GPT is to take
up necessary research and collect
all the valid information relating to the topic. Pro’s and Con’s?
I am not missing any valid information and the content become more
informative and reliable but I stopped researching on the whole.
This routine continued for some time and I greatly improved
my writing efficiency and greatly saved my time and energy. Later I
noticed chat GPT sometimes becomes smarter than me, in using
apt words. Some words or phrases it used were so powerful that no other
word could replace them. So I thought why shouldn’t I
give more responsibility to it since it is performing well?
I remodeled my writing style once again. Chat GPT will
provide research material, I will create an outline of the content using
this research material and turn back to Chat GPT again to fine-tune. With last
last-minute humane touch, the
writeups will translate into a well-researched and informative blog promptly. This way I impressed my clients. To make it more humane, it's easy for me to rephrase the AI-generated
content by interchanging some
words or by adding or deleting some
words. The job finished and the client was impressed.
As everything was going well
and well, I received an assignment
with strict guidance. No Grammarly or No AI, a challenge that I hadn’t faced
in over a year. Yet, determined, I completed the content without relying
on AI.
During the drafting process, I felt how difficult it has become for me to
write anything without AI. Each paragraph seemed like a puzzle, and
I could not find the words flowing effortlessly I used to get before using Chat
GPT. A feeling of addiction or dependency weighed heavily on my mind,
making it difficult to compose anything without AI Assistance.
Why I am telling you all this today?
I revisited the assignment I wrote today. To be frank, it looks like the worst piece of content I
ever wrote. It was riddled with errors, precision was nowhere, and sentences
were either lengthy or resembled a scattered string of beads from a broken
necklace. A summary of all wrong elements.
So I decided to reduce the influence of AI in my writing.
While it may require more time and effort, I believe it is crucial to
preserve the writer in me otherwise, I fear AI and its dependence will erode those
skills in me over time. I also wish to recommend to budding writers to
consider taking a break from AI or at the very least, don’t entrust
too much responsibility to it. it is like giving a camel space in your tent-you
will be out of the tent gradually.
After reading this, can anyone tell me whether I used chat
GPT in drafting this content? Earnest answers are expected.
